Elephants were a threat on the highways in the 1950s.. I remember having to break our school trip to Anuradhapura from Point-Pedro, at Medawachchiya as it was past 6pm and the fear of meeting wild elephants on the road. We slept overnight in a school and did the journey to Anuradhapura the next morning. The Skin of the feet of hunted elephants were used as umbrella stands and the the skins of the penis of elephants, made handy golf ball carrier bags. Those were the days when plastics were unheard of. |
